Which Subscription Gives the Best Value? (Head-to-Head Test)
ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro, and Perplexity Pro all cost $20/month. Here's how they actually compare on the criteria that matter most.
Objective
Four major AI subscriptions now converge on the same $20/month price point: ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro, and Perplexity Pro. Same price, very different products. This lab compares them head-to-head on the criteria that actually decide value for most users, using each provider’s publicly listed plan details as of July 2026.
Methodology
We compared the four plans across five criteria: price, flagship model access, usage limits, unique included features, and ecosystem integration. Scores below are a directional 1-5 editorial assessment based on each provider’s official plan documentation, not a controlled benchmark run — usage limits in particular are dynamic and provider-reported ranges, not fixed numbers we measured ourselves. Treat this as a starting point for your own evaluation, not a substitute for checking the current official pricing page.
Subscriptions tested
| Plan | Price | Flagship model access | Standout feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | $20/mo | GPT-5.5, limited advanced reasoning | Sora video access (limited), DALL-E, Advanced Voice, custom GPTs |
| Claude Pro | $20/mo ($17/mo annual) | Claude Opus/Sonnet family | Claude Code CLI included on every paid plan |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99/mo | Gemini Pro family | Bundled cloud storage (multiple TB) and deep Gmail/Docs/Drive integration |
| Perplexity Pro | $20/mo | Routes across GPT, Claude, and Gemini models | Multi-model routing plus monthly API credit allowance |
Scoring
| Criteria | ChatGPT Plus | Claude Pro | Google AI Pro | Perplexity Pro |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General writing & chat | 4/5 | 5/5 | 4/5 | 3/5 |
| Coding & developer use | 3/5 | 5/5 | 3/5 | 2/5 |
| Research with live citations | 3/5 | 3/5 | 4/5 | 5/5 |
| Ecosystem/integration value | 3/5 | 3/5 | 5/5 | 3/5 |
| Extras beyond core chat | 5/5 (video, image, voice) | 4/5 (Claude Code) | 5/5 (storage, Workspace) | 3/5 (API credits) |
Observations
- Claude Pro is the strongest single choice for anyone whose primary use is writing or software development — Claude Code being bundled at no extra cost is a meaningful inclusion for developers who’d otherwise pay separately for a coding assistant.
- Google AI Pro delivers the most value if you already pay for (or need) cloud storage — the bundled storage alone is close to a standalone Google One subscription price, making the effective AI cost lower than the sticker price suggests.
- Perplexity Pro is the standout for research-heavy use, since it isn’t locked to one provider’s model and routes queries to whichever model performs best for that query type.
- ChatGPT Plus wins on breadth of extras (video, image, voice, custom GPTs) rather than depth in any single category — a reasonable default if you don’t have a clearly dominant use case yet.
Conclusions
At an identical $20/month price point, there is no universal winner — the right plan is the one that matches your dominant use case from the table above. If you split your time across multiple task types and don’t want to choose, Perplexity Pro’s routing approach avoids the trade-off, at the cost of not being the top performer in any single category. Limitations
- Pricing and included features change frequently — verify current details on each provider’s official pricing page before subscribing.
- Usage limits are provider-reported ranges rather than numbers we independently measured; actual limits can vary by account and time of day.
- Scores reflect an editorial assessment of publicly available plan details, not a blind controlled test across identical prompts.
